Page 1 Cover Page 2 and 3 Back of cover and contents Page 4 and 5 Copyright and Title Page 6 and 7 In a big, tall tree in a great, big jungle, lived an Orangutan called Tan! Tan and his mother loved to play. It was their favourite thing to do! All day long they swung through vines and jumped from branch to branch. That was until… Page 8 and 9 The rumbling began. For weeks and weeks, the rumbling got louder and louder. It would rumble the ground, and rumble the leaves, and rumble poor Tan in his big, tall tree! Then one day his mother exclaimed “We have to move far away from this place!” Page 10 and 11 Tan was upset, he didn’t want to go, but the rumbling was getting closer and closer. It was time to leave, and they had to leave quickly. They had to swing faster than ever before. Tan was fast but his mother was faster. He was getting tired; his arms were aching and so he couldn’t k...

Negotiated Programme Briefs. The first brief I created for myself was to create a compelling narrative for a picture book which has a thought-provoking message behind it. This will be in the format of a children’s picture book and will be targeted at children from 2 - 8 years old. I also want to make the story interesting enough for the parents to enjoy, This by them being able to see the moral behind the narrative and learn something from it too. The second brief is for an illustrated trail. For this I will design a brand-new trail for Trentham Estate that is engaging and educational for children. This will include posters/signs dotted around the Italian Gardens for the children to follow the story along. The target audience is children from 3- 10 years old and families that visit the gardens. Children’s Picture Book Research Initially I wanted the story to be light hearted surrounding an Orangutan who doesn’t fit in. It would have a basic moral abou...
Perseus and Medusa: Signs pt 3

(should have been published 9/12/21) For this one, I wanted the whole illustration to be the sign. This is because I think this one illustration explains everything the narrative is saying. You can see Perseus is in Medusa's lair and that he uses his shield to see Medusa's face. In this sign, you can see this is when Perseus finally attacks Medusa and beheads her. I think that this positioning is a way way to show the sequence in the story. I think the colours go well together too. The only problem could be Medusa's shin tone is green and does blend in with the background colour. I could always add a drop shadow to prevent this from happening. This is the final sign in the gardens where everything needs to be rounded up. So I have the king turning to stone, Perseus reuniting with his mother and then Perseus dancing at the end for the final question.

Colour thumbnails of Back Cover I had two different options I wanted to do for the back cover. I either wanted the mother and the orangutan together on the page. Or I just wanted the background. When designing the full book cover, I want it to look like a continuation of the front cover on the next page. Because of this reason, I think the first illustration with the mother holding the Orangutan could be a little bit confusing. Full Book Cover Here's the final book cover design. I think that the colours I have used are really bright. It allows both the Orangutan and the "Help!" stand out. However, I do think the orangutan could be bigger and going forward I will need to include my name on the front cover and come up with a blurb. Book cover with sizing Here's the book cover in reference to the sizing I would like it to be in. Going forward I might make the spine thinner as when I go to outsource a company to print it, I don't think they'll be able to print...

Here's Perseus walking through Medusa's layer and spotting her through his shield. I wanted this to be the only illustration on this sign. Mainly because I don't think I needed anything else to show whats happening. Also, I think this looks really effective just as a stand alone image. For the next sign I needed to show Perseus ready to attack Medusa- but with his eyes closed. I think this illustration shows this well. I like how you can see the movement in the illustration- without any animation. I needed to show Medusa beheaded, however, I didn't want this to look too gruesome so instead of blood I included red 'swirls' dangling from her neck. I think this has taken a comedic approach to the story so it won't be too graphic for children who want to follow the trail. Finally, I needed to illustrate Perseus turning the evil King to stone. I think this was the best way to represent it in a spot illustration, however, Perseus does look short in comparison...

For this sign I needed to introduce the objects that Perseus needs to obtain from the witches. And to show Perseus, Athena and Hermes together on the sign. So, I needed room for the words and room to include most of the objects. This is why there's so many illustrations and different sections for words. As I explained in the previous blog post. I wanted this sign to be one main illustration to show Perseus tricking the witches. It looks effective, however, the capes the witches are wearing are a bit odd and the expression on Perseus' face is bland.

For each sign I needed to illustrate a character in a different pose each time. He's my new version of Hermes in a power stance, ready to take on the old witches. However, on this design I forgot to include his magic sandals that help him to fly, so when I create the sign I will quickly draw them on for continuity. Here's my second position of the old witches. I wanted them to look like they are revelling in their power and are worshipping the eye. I thought this was important to include as its a main part of the plot. I included fire and a glowing light to this scene to show that Perseus, Hermes and Athena have reached the end of the world. This is to translate to children that Perseus and themselves are in danger. For this sign I wanted the scene to fill the whole of the board, this is why the old witches and Perseus fill the whole page. I also included the fire and columns for continuity. However, I have noticed these columns are different to the previous ones I dre...
