Illustrating a poem
Initial development
I initially started being quite literal with my idea and intentions behind the poem "Love after Love" by Derek Walcott. This was by drawing objects that were in the poem. This allowed me to brain storm concepts and ideas as well as different placements of the text too.
I then moved on to creating a setting for the poem to be. I imagined a long dining room with one seat at the table and picture frames across the walls leading up to it. I really liked this idea so developed it more on the next page.
On the next page, as it mentions an opening a door in the poem I wanted to create this stretched out dining room but in the perspective of a peep hole. As if you're looking into your own mid at the feast of your life. I also came up with the idea of the picture frames on the wall having the text of the poem in them so I developed this idea further too.
This was my final outcome. I wanted to have the love letters and the heart on the shelf above to reference the poem even more. Although this is just a quick sketch of what the illustration would look like, the outcome is what I envisioned. I wanted the style to be different that I'm used to and overall I think its playful and a positive response to the poem.
